“A whole life can be changed by one book:” Interpersonal Conflict Resolution Using the ABLE MINDS Consequential Thinking Program

The presenter shares his 15-year experience teaching adult males a consequential thinking seminar called ABLE MINDS (Altering Behavior through Literary Exploration & Moderated INquiry-based Discussion Sessions). ABLE MINDS acknowledges that impulsive behavior causes criminal thinking. Stories selected for modeling positive interpersonal conflict skills include Lord of the Rings, The Exorcist, and Life of Pi. Inmates discuss plot points on how protagonist’s impulsiveness result in tragic-but-avoidable consequences. Inmates then transition to the sharing of similar failures in their criminal pasts, & apply the THINK FIRST mechanism to their incarcerated lives.
